Welcome
Hello. I'm BT Vance, writer and illustrator.
I grew up watching shows like Little Bear and Franklin, shows that had a slow, steady, calm pace. I love the old classic children's books that were simple and honest, but magical and enchanting. I love myths, fables, and legends that tell powerful stories with morals that stick with you. Those are the kinds of things I wanted to capture for my own children's books, magic, simplicity, morals, wonder, and enchantment.
Slow Down is my first attempt at that. It's a book that explores the quiet spaces we often overlook—the pauses, the breaths, the small moments that shape our days. With a background in design and a lifelong fascination with simplicity, I wanted to create a story that invites readers of all ages to slow down, pay attention, and reconnect with the present moment. My debut picture book, Slow Down, is the first title in The Quiet Line Series, a collection of minimalist, sensory‑driven books that use a single continuous line to guide readers through gentle, reflective experiences.
My creative philosophy centers on the idea that children’s books don’t need to be loud or flashy to be engaging. Instead, I believe that calm, spacious storytelling can offer something even more powerful—a chance for children and caregivers to breathe together, to share a moment of stillness, and to experience the beauty of simplicity. My illustrations are intentionally minimal, using clean lines and open space to create room for imagination, curiosity, and emotional connection.
Before turning to picture books, I spent years working in creative fields where clarity, restraint, and thoughtful design were essential. Those influences shape my approach to storytelling today. Each book I create is crafted with careful attention to pacing, touch, and sensory experience, encouraging readers to trace, follow, and feel their way through the pages.
I live in Arizona, where the desert’s quiet expanses and slow, shifting light continue to inspire my work. When I'm not drawing or writing, I enjoy bike rides, observing the subtle rhythms of nature, and finding new ways to bring mindfulness into everyday life. Through The Quiet Line Series and my future children's books, I hope to offer families a gentle invitation: to pause, to notice, and to rediscover the simple joy of being present together.
Thanks for visiting.
